Where Will Cook County's Cowart Be On August 17th?

Just 43 days ago Kaleb Cowart was leading the Cook County Hornets to the GHSA AA State Baseball title in Adel, GA. Today he is in Los Angeles representing Gatorade at The ESPYS.
After hitting .654 with 11 HR, 59 RBI and stealing 36 bases in his senior campaign for the Hornets, Cowart was named Gatorade – National Baseball Player of the Year, offered an athletic scholarship to FSU, then picked in the first round of the MLB draft by the Anaheim Angels. He could add to his resume tonight by being named Gatorade - Player of the Year (For all sports).
With an August 16th signing deadline only 32 days away for the Angels, Cowart’s life will change dramatically in a short timespan.
The Georgia Sports Report asked Cowart – Where will you be on August 17th?
Cowart – “I honestly do not know, but I am excited about either outcome. This entire experience has been very humbling. God has blessed me, and I would never have gotten where I am without my parents' support. For years they drove me all over the state to play in baseball tournaments. I owe them a lot.”
The Adel, GA native would not discuss dollars, but several reports have the 18th overall pick of the MLB draft asking for a $3,000,000 signing bonus and the Angels offering $1,000,000. Cowart would only say, “We are in a negotiating process”.
What is your opinion? Should Cowart sign with the Angels, report to rookie ball in Arizona, and begin playing third and hitting professionally; or report for his freshman year at Florida State?

  1. Take the money kid. If you manage it properly you can always go back to college for a degree. You could also blow out your knee or tear up your shoulder.

    Be smart.

  2. FSU has a great baseball program. The Drew boys from Hahira went there and they are in the big show. Other side, Cowart can only advance 17 spots and could drop many. Comes down to (1) Does he need the money to support family?...NO (2) Does he want to experience college life before playing pro.. Only he knows. (3) Is he mentally prepared to play pro ball?...YES.

  3. FSU also has a history of protecting and not overworking their players. Look at Posey and his bonus!

Come on down to Tallahassee Kaleb!
